at first the lack of structure felt like freedom — almost like an act of rebellion against my former very routined london life
BUT as time went on i craved balance
after much trial & error i’ve found my non negotiables that ground me wherever i am in the world
here’s my lil recipe:
morning movement ( 5 squats, 5 lunges each leg, 5 pushups, 30 second plank ) this wakes me up & keeps me energised
meditation ( 10 minute timer, in silence ) to center me & bring balance to my mind
journaling ( stream of consciousness aka my rambles & gratitude ) to clear my thoughts
reading ( at least a chapter a day, and always before bed )
steps ( aim for 10-13k minimum ) exploring on foot helps me to fully take in each city
to do list ( tick-able boxes on the iPhone notes app, so simple but so effective ) perfect way to empty my brain & allow me to be more present
i’ll usually do the first 4 before i go on my phone in the morning to try and keep dopamine levels balanced
this may sound like a fair few things to do, but realistically this whole list ( apart from the steps count ) takes me no more than an hour to do each morning and you can seriously do it anywhere… i’ll do my morning movement in the bathroom right before my shower sometimes if the hostel dormitory is lacking in space. im YET to find a space that i can’t do it in
and while i did enjoy my anti-routine for a while, having these habits in place helps me to feel more energized & happy each day :)
i would love to hear if you’ve given it a go, or if you have any travel routine tips to share of your own
mik xx
